Heat the oven to 400°F. Brown the beef and onion in a deep skillet, breaking up the meat, 8 minutes. Drain excess fat and stir in marinara.

Mix ricotta, egg, half the Parmesan, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and black pepper.

Layer sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella in a 9-by-13-inch dish three times. Finish with sauce, remaining mozzarella, and Parmesan.

Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake until browned and bubbling, 12 to 15 minutes more. Rest for 10 minutes.
